Chet Valk was my granduncle, born to my great-grandparents, William James Valk and Agnes Tuinstra. He orginally was named William Thomas Valk, but his parents soon renamed him John Chester, a detail they never changed on his birth certificate, and which was never noticed until he enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Chet married his brother Bill's ex-wife, Elfriede Lomker Valk, and raised his nephew, James Frederick Valk, until his untimely death during the War. Chet served with the 101st Airborne, and was parachuting into the front at Foy, Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge when he was shot and killed.

His remains were later returned to his family, who buried him at Rosedale Memorial Park.
