Joseph was a lawyer, practicing first in Burlington and Milton before moving to Richmond.
Some Vermont burial records, available online, have been incorrectly indexed to suggest that Joseph died in Burlington, possibly because that organization asumed that everyone interred in Elmwood Cemetery must have died in Burlington. While he was buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Burlington, he died in Richmond, Vermont:
Burlington Free Press, March 22, 1861: "Died, At Richmond, March 15th, of congestion of the lungs, Joseph W. Allen, Esq., aged 42 years."
Birth date ofJanuary 17, 1818 from "Sketch of Joseph William Allen, Esq." by By Rev. John Kendrick Converse, published in "The Vermont Historical Gazetteer" (Abby Maria Hemenway, 1864). Converse states "From his early childhood he was distinguished by a most generous and amiable temper, ever ready to yield his own interests for the benefit or pleasure of others. "
