Jack joined the United States Air Force in 1950, and was stationed in Weidboten, Germany, as a flight engineer. He returned to the states in 1954 and was stationed in San Francisco until he was honorably discharged in November of 1954.

On July 31, 1962, Jack married Paula Mitchell in Spirit Lake, Iowa. This marriage was blessed with three children and two stepchildren.
