Honorable Sullivan M. Cutcheon moved to Ypsilanti in the 1850s with his family and married Josephine Louise Moore in Ypsilanti on December 8, 1859. They were the parents of three children, Adeline Louise McCutcheon, James Herbert and Sullivan M. Cutcheon.
Sullivan was a prominent lawyer in Ypsilanti and served in the of House of Representatives in the State of Michigan (1861 - 1864). He was on the first board of directors for the Woodlawn Cemetery in Detroit (1895).

Honorable Sullivan M. Cutcheon, ex Speaker of the Michigan House of Representatives and prominent in local business circles, died at his residence early this morning, aged 67 years.
Mr. Cutcheon was born in Pembroke, New Hampshire. While Superintendent of Schools at Pittsfield, Illinois In 1858, he became an intimate friend of President Lincoln. Mr. Cutcheon was Chairman of the Michigan Delegation at the Republican National Convention of 1868, which nominated General Grant for the Presidency. He was also chairman of the committee which revised the Michigan Constitution in 1873. Mr. Cutcheon was United States District Attorney for Eastern Michigan under Presidents Hayes and Arthur.
