It is very uncommon for there to be discrepancy on a headstone. However. in Dr. Perry's claim for Pension (Certificate # 38063) dated 27 July 1906, in his own hand he states his date of birth was 17 March 1836. And again in the bio-sketch in his Application for Assistant Surgeon dated 29 August 1861, he writes, "...I am twenty-five years & five months of age. My birth place was Worcester Mass..." [Iowa University Digital Library], that would make his birth year 1836 as well. So it is apparent that the grave marker is in error as to the year of birth. It was 1836, not 1835.
