Ovington moved to Santa Barbara, Calif. in 1919. There he established the city's first airfield, an airstrip with a hangar, located near his home in the Samarkand area. Noted contemporary aviators Amelia Earhart, Charles Lindbergh and Jimmy Doolittle used the airstrip on visits to the area in the early days of aviation.
Ovington was the second of three sons born to Edward Judson Ovington, Jr. (1855-1910) and Mary Whitmore Barnes (1853-1910). He married Adelaide Curtis Alexander on Apr. 19, 1911, in Manhattan. They had two children: Earle Kester Ovington (1912-2006) and Audrey Ovington (1914-2005).
