Horace was the third of nine children born to Lester and Huldah (Humphrey) Boyd. He spent his early years in Chelsea Vermont, but the family relocated to Cornish, New Hampshire, before 1870. The 1800 census shows Horace boarded in Windsor, Vermont, where he worked as a prison guard, a job he held for most of his adult life. He also worked for the Boston and Maine Railroad.

On May 2, 1882 he married Helen George. They lived at 32 Ascutney Street. They had two sons, though one died in childhood.

Horace's obituary said he had a was a member of the Masonic Lodge, and that he had a quiet disposition.
