Mrs. Lew Williams, Early Day Elba Resident Died at Grand Island Hospital
RITES AT ELBA TODAY
Mrs. Lew Williams, 84, mother of Ben Gaast of Grand Island, formerly of Elba, died at 2:30 Monday morning at a hospital in Grand Is.....(line omitted here in newspaper)
for the past seven years but was able to be up and around the home of her son, where she resided until six weeks ago when she fell and fractured her hip. Services are being held today, Wednesday, at 2:30 in the Lutheran church at Elba with Rev. W. J. Primrose of this city officiating. Burial will be in the Grand Island cemetery [sic].
Grandma Williams as she was affectionately known by friends and acquaintances was a very cheerful character. Pleasant and with a fine personality she was a favorite in every group. She was a good mother and knew the trials of the early pioneer days, having homesteaded here 55 years ago. Hannah Gaast was born Mar. 7, 1871, at Des Moines, Ia., the daughter of Henry and Maria Gaast. She came to Nebraska with her parents in a covered wagon when she was 18 years old. She was married to Lewis Williams in 1898 at St. Paul. One son, Benjamin, was born to them. She lived on the homestead in Howard county until eight years ago, when she came to Grand Island to make her home with her son. Her husband died in 1923.
Surviving are her son, Ben Gaast of Grand Island, one sister, Mrs. Amanda Kingston, of Montana and other relatives. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one brother.
