Hugh Caldwell Wright enlisted as a private with Company K, 22nd Infantry Regiment Virginia on April 24, 1862 at White Sulphur Springs, Virginia (now West Virginia). On December 30, 1863, he was detailed in the government shoe shop; he returned on May 1, 1864, was exchanged on March 15, 1865, hospitalized on March 19, 1865 at Chimborazo Hospital, Richmond, Virginia (chronic diarrhea) and returned on March 24, 1865.

Hugh C. Wright applied for a disability pension as a result of his service with the Confederate States of America on April 4, 1908. According to the application on file in the Archives with the Library of Virginia, he served with the Company K, 22nd Virginia Infantry under the command of Col. Patton and Lt. Col. Bartley. He enlisted at Lewisburg, Virginia in 1862 and served until Lee's surrender. The medical reports from Dr. B. R. Caldwell and Dr. L. M. Abbott written at the time of his application for disability benefits, Hugh C. Caldwell suffered from rheumatism and old age.

Hugh C. Wright drowned when the buggy he was driving overturned while crossing Barbour's Creek.
