Obstetrician and Pioneer of Anaesthetics. Physician to Queen Victoria.He discovered the anaesthetic properties of chloroform and the first in Britain to use ether. He was a pioneer in the use of anaesthetics, particularly chloroform, developing its use in surgery and childbirth. In 1866 Simpson became the first person to be knighted for services to medicine.
