Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. As a Captain, he commanded Battery D of the 33rd Missouri Volunteer Infantry during the Battle for Helena, Arkansas on July 4, 1863. When he demanded the surrender of Bell's Regiment, Lieutenant Colonel Johnson asked by what authority. Hudson responded "By authority of my twelve pound howitzer." When the 60th USCT was organized later in 1863, he was made its commanding officer. He commanded the unit from October 13, 1863 until it was mustered out of service at the conclusion of the war on October 15, 1865. The Sixtieth regiment of the United States Colored Troops was largely made up of Iowa men. During most of the war it was assigned garrison duty at St. Louis. Hudson was made a Brevet Brigadier General for distinguished gallantry at the Battle of Helena. After the war he resumed his career as a farmer and carpenter.
