Marsden Hartley is one of America's most admired and respected modernist painters. Born in Lewiston, Maine, January 4, 1877, Marsden Hartley moved with his parents to Cleveland in 1892, where he briefly attended classes at the Cleveland Art Institute. In New York, he studied under William Merritt Chase and the National Academy of Design. His style was most greatly influenced by Albert Pinkham Ryder and the Impressionist Giovanni Segantini. He had his first one man show at Stieglitz's "291 " gallery in 1909. Through Stieglitz , and Stieglitz’s wife Georgia O’Keefe, he was introduced to the art of Cezanne and Picasso. While living abroad in France and Germany from 1912 to 1915, he made the acquaintance of Ezra Pound, Fernand Leger and others. His work began to show influences of Kandinsky, Franz Marc and the Fauves. Returning to America, he worked in Provincetown, Maine, New Mexico, California and New York before returning to Europe in 1921. By 1920 Hartley's painting had become increasingly representational. His later work expresses a strong romantic attachment to his native land and that of the Southwest. Returning to America in 1930, he traveled extensively while working mostly in his native Maine. Marsden’s paintings and drawings from the 30s and 40s focus on the Lovell area, Mount Katahdin, the coast and fishermen of the Corea area. In addition to painting, Hartley was an accomplished poet and wrote essays on modern art.Hartley died on September 2, 1943 in Ellsworth, Maine, and his ashes scattered over the Androscoggin River.
