Indiana Governor. He attended De Pauw University, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1887 and established a successful legal career in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was chairman of the Indiana Republican Party, (1901-10) and served as a member of the Republican National Committee, (1912-16). In 1916, he was elected as a Republican the 29th Governor of Indiana, serving until 1921. During his term, the department of conservation and the state highway commission were initiated, the state park system was structured and a prohibition law was passed, as well as a federal women's suffrage amendment. After leaving office, he became successful in business investments and held controlling interests several large Indiana companies. He died of a cerebral hemorrhage at age 76.
