Sarah Alberta Clardy Harris was the third and youngest child born to Reginald Gerard Clardy, Sr. and Mamie Elizabeth Leonard Clardy. She made her grand entrance into earthly existence on Sunday, May 30, 1926 and made her glorious entrance into eternal life on Wednesday, May 22, 2013.

Sarah was reared in a Christian home. She accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior in 1938 and was baptized as a member of Westwood Baptist Church under the pastorate of the late Rev. Ambrose A. Bennett. (The baptism ceremony transpired at Pleasant Green Baptist Church because at that time Westwood did not possess a baptismal pool.)

Sarah was educated in the segregated Nashville Public School System. Blessed with an exceptional intellect and wit, she excelled in her studies. In 1942, at the age of 16, she graduated from Pearl High School and was one of the four students with an "A" grade point average. These four were privileged to address the assembly at the Commencement Exercise. Additionally, Sarah was selected as the "class prophet."

Following in her sister's footsteps, Sarah matriculated at Fisk University and was inducted into the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. At Fisk, she served as campus president of the Baptist Student Union and as a member of the Fisk Herald. With a major in Religion and a minor in Mathematics, Sarah graduated with "Magna Cum Laude" honors from Fisk University in 1946 while at the age of nineteen.

On Sunday, March 17, 1946, Sarah Clardy married her high school sweetheart, Caesar Harris, Jr. To this union, four children were born. This marriage ended in divorce in 1956.

Amidst the strain and struggles of rearing four children as a single parent, Sarah enjoyed a double blessing: ever-present were the physical and spiritual support of her Christian mother and the divine guidance and strength of her Heavenly Father. As a result of her determined intentions and divine interventions, all of her children accepted Christ and were baptized at an early age, were reared in Westwood Baptist Church, graduated from high school and college, and remained faithful to the Lord and the Lord's.

Sarah's professional career as a Mathematics teacher in the Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools spanned three decades - the 1950's through the 1970's. She taught at Johnson School, Cameron Jr. High School, Rose Park Jr. High School, McMurray Jr. High School, and Wharton Jr. High School.

Well deserved was her "classic" reputation for being a superior instructor and a strong disciplinarian. It was her personal conviction that "discipline" was essential for "learning"; and that the teacher must "control" the classroom to "maximize" the learning experience. This conviction governed her interaction with children at home, school and church. Sarah Harris retired from teaching in 1978.

Sarah's giftedness as an educator was self-evident not only in the school house but in the church house. She served as a teacher in nearly every department of the Sunday School, from the youth to the adults. Although she labored in numerous church ministries and leadership capacities, the teaching ministry is where she performed her greatest work and received her greatest joy.

Sarah is due serious commendation for the sacrificial service and unwavering devotion she provided her bedridden mother for nearly ten years. Laboring with little assistance, she cared for her beloved mother with much compassion and without any complaint.

Sarah C. Harris has been called from labor to reward. Now that her work has been done, the Lord God has called her home.

She was preceded in death by both parents, her only sister: Marian Elois Clardy Patton, and her youngest child: Delia Ann Harris McPherson.
