Joseph was the 4th son born of John Allen & Laetitia Saunders Allen.


On 2 Jun 1846, Joseph volunteered to serve during the Mexican War. He signed on as a private in Capt Anderson's company of the 1st Regiment of Tennessee Volunteers Infantry. His initial term of service was for 12 months. While serving in Mexico in August 1846, he was promoted/elected a 2nd lieutentant in Capt William M. Blackmore's company, as an assistant commissariat (commissary officer). During the Battle for Monterey on 21 September 1846, Joseph was wounded and lost his left leg below the knee. He returned home to Gallatin, Tennessee for convalescent leave until 30 Apr 1847, then he returned to service in May 1847 in New Orleans, LA., where he was promoted to captain prior to the completion of his contract.


Joseph was married to Miss Susan O. Trousdale October 27, 1847.They moved to Memphis, Tennessee where Joseph ran a merchantile. They had three children - Joseph, Jr., Mary, and John. Neither Joseph nor John survived childhood, and Mary's fate is unclear.


After Joseph passed suddenly in Memphis, his widow Susan married Brig Gen Samuel R. Anderson.
