Memories of Aunt Ethel by Mary E.Scott Mueller.
We called her Audy. She graduated from Mississippi State College for Women in 1923, the year I was born. It must have been from my youngest days to aspire to be like her. When I was a child she came home to visit my grandparents at Thanksgiving, Christmas and at other times through out the year. She drove a car, and at Christmas she brought many presents, beautifully packaged, and some of her home canned pickles and homemade fruit cake. When I was 12 she invited me, my sister, Margaret, and a male cousin, to spend time with her at 4-H Club Camp, near Pensacola, FL.
She bought the tickets for us to ride all night on the train and with a berth for three of us to sleep together.
This was the longest journey any of us had made and this was an exciting event traveling from Memphis to Pensacola.
When I graduated from high school, Audy invited me and my sister to visit the summer at her home in Pensacola. She gave me the responability to drive her car, buy groceries, help to cook, to clean house, and to enjoy a social life with other men and women at swim trips and dance parties.
When the summer ended I enrolled in the same college she graduated from, studied the same curriculum to a B.S. degree, with financial help from her. I married, had five children, and finally had a successful career as an educator for 28 years. I was one of several others who were helped to achieve through her generosity and vision.
