The Austin Daily Herald; 03 Jan 1928, Tue ·Page 2:

Mrs. Sophronia Dean, aged 87 years and five months, succumbed to high blood pressure at her home three miles east of Rose Creek yesterday afternoon at 4:45. For the past few months Mrs. Dean had been in failing health but only since Thanksgiving Day had she been seriously ill and confined to her bed.

Mrs. Dean was born August 2, 1840 of Canadian parentage, being the daughter of George Hubbard, a pioneer lumberman of Canada in the early forties, and she grew up in Pickering, Province of Ontario, Canada. She was next to the eldest of a family of five children, all of whom are now deceased. In 1869 she was married at Toledo, O., to Warren H. Dean, then of New York City.

In 1870, Mr. and Mrs. Dean moved to St. Paul, where Mr. Dean became engaged in the real estate business and was also the founder and owned controlling interest in the first St. Paul city railway. In 1876 Mr. Dean acquired land interests in Marshall township and moved onto his farm in that township. He died in 1880 leaving his widow and four children.

Mrs. Dean and family moved to Northfield in 1887, where she resided until 1902. She lived a number of years in Minneapolis and in 1918 returned to this county to live with her son, Warren H. Dean and her daughter, Mrs. Day Woodcock on the Dean farm near Rose Creek. Mrs. Dean is survived by her four children: William W. Dean of Adams, Mrs. Day Woodcock and Warren H. dean of Rose Creek, Mrs. Ann H. Maughan of Minneapolis, and seven grandchildren. She was president of the First National Bank of Adams and also of the State Bank of Rose Creek.

In the death of Mrs. Dean, Mower county loses a well known woman of outstanding character. Her long and useful life was marked by achievements and many friendships. In all walks of life she had many who turned to her for help, companionship or inspiration. In her home she was supreme and the idol of her children and grandchildren. She loved young people about her and kept her joy in youth throughout her life. Gifted with a keen mind and rare intelligence, her advice was sought and valued. She had a genius for friendships and wherever she lived she had a wide circle of devoted friends. Her home was noted for its cheer and hospitality and Mrs. Dean was at her best when she sat at her own board and dispensed her bounty. The poor knew her generosity and the unfortunate her kindness. She was loyal and beloved. In the little home church in Rose Creek she was honored and appreciated for her faithfulness and good work.

In her social life she added grace by her presence and always gave more than she received. She was an interesting personality for she had seen much of life and the world but it never unfitted her for the humblest associates or the simplest duties. She adapted herself to conditions and her farm home in Mower county was a center of social and cultural attractions.

She was given length of years surrounded by those who loved her and many will rise up to call her blessed.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 12:30 at the Rose Creek community church and interment will be made in the family lot at Oakland cemetery, St. Paul, on Thursday.
