Rev. Marshall Walter Hendrix, 81, Brazil, passed away at 3:15 a.m., Saturday, April 5, 2008, while a patient at Davis Gardens Healthcare Center, Terre Haute.
Although a lifelong resident of Brazil, Rev. Hendrix resided the last year of his life at Bethesda Gardens, Terre Haute.
Rev. Hendrix was born Nov. 7, 1926, in Brazil, as the son of Vivan "Vern" and Thelma Hudson Hendrix.
Rev. Hendrix graduated from Brazil High School before entering the United States Army in January 1945. He served two tours of duty in the Pacific Theater during World War II and was stationed in the Philippine Islands.
In 1946, he was honorably discharged with special commendations from Gen. Omar Bradley for meritorious service.
After returning state side, he returned to work in his family business in Brazil. Shortly thereafter, Rev. Hendrix was employed by the Weaver Co., Brazil; Artetex Corp., and later Allis Chalmers, Terre Haute, and in 1962, he began work at Allison Transmission Div., Indianapolis. While employed with Allison's, Rev. Hendrix advanced to the position of welding engineer, a position he held until his retirement in 1993.
On June 17, 1949, Rev. Hendrix was united in marriage to Betty Jean Lawson.
In January 1952, Rev. Hendrix became a member of the congregation of Bethel United Methodist Church, Brazil, a parish where he held his membership until his death. Throughout those years, he held numerous positions in the church, including Sunday School Superintendent, Trustee, Chairman of the Evangelism and Membership committees, Sunday School Teacher and Lay Leader.
Rev. Hendrix's affiliation with the United Methodist Church and most importantly, his Christian faith, would guide his life for the remainder of his years.
In the mid 1950s, he began attending United Methodist sponsored classes and workshops at DePauw University, Greencastle. He was certified by the Church as a Certified Lay Speaker and for the years that followed, served many pulpits. Rev. Hendrix's last pastoral assignment was to the congregation of Carbon United Methodist Church, a placement he held for 22 years. In 1999, Rev. Hendrix was granted full ministerial authority and privileges by Bishop Woodie White. In 2004, Rev. Hendrix retired from parish ministry but continued to serve the Church.
For 55 years, Rev. Hendrix was a member of the Knightsville Masonic Lodge, No. 409, F.&A.M. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite, Valley of Terre Haute and American Legion Post No. 2. In 1966, Rev. Hendrix was included in the Who's Who in the Methodist Church, second edition.
Rev. Hendrix was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of nearly 58 years, Betty, sister Vivian Winters, and two brothers-in-law Charles Winters and Ivan Fritz.
He is survived by four sons, Jon Hendrix and wife Shiela, Edinburgh, Ind., Jay Hendrix and wife Darlene, Terre Haute, James Hendrix, Plainfield, and Jack Hendrix and wife Laura, Terre Haute, sister Joanna Fritz, five grandchildren, Angela, Michael, Christina, Alyssa and Alexandra, and three great-grandchildren, Ashlee, Anthony-Joseph and MacKenzie.
Services will be at 1 p.m., Wednesday, April 9, at Moore Funeral Home, with Rev. Richard Pippin officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Clearview Cemetery.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m., Tuesday, April 8, from noon until time of services Wednesday.
A Masonic Memorial service will be conducted Tuesday at 7 p.m.
