He began his military service during the Great Patriotic War of 1942, as a member of the Soviet Black Sea Fleet. Following graduation from the Frunze Naval School Academy in 1947, he was assigned as a submarine commander, serving in both the Northern and Pacific fleets. In 1958 he was appointed as the commanding officer of the Pacific Fleet's nuclear submarine program, where he oversaw the Soviet Union's first test firing of a submarine launched ballistic missile (SLBM). From 1973 to 1977, he served as editor-in-chief of Maritime Digest Magazine where he wrote numerous articles and essays on the Russian Navy. He spent his later years conducting scientific work for the Defense Ministry Research Institute, and also served as a leading spokesman for the information and public relations branch of the Russian Naval Fleet.
