Inventor. Known as "The Father of Alkaline", he was born in Pontypool, Ontario Canada. After graduating from the University of Toronto, he began working for the Eveready Battery Company where he invented the alkaline battery. At the time of his death he held over fifty patents, including several for the lithium battery, which is the energy source for most cell phones and cameras. His protoype alkaline battery and the first produced cylindrical battery are on display next to Thomas Edison's light bulb at the Smithsonian Institution Museum of American History. An estimated eighty percent of all dry cell batteries used in the world are based on his work. He died near Cleveland, Ohio at the age of 77.
