Civil War Union Army veteran. Private, Co. G, 11th Massachusetts Infantry. He was a farmer from Salem when he enlisted, at the age of 18, December 12, 1861. He was wounded in 1862 and July 2, 1863, at Gettysburg. He was the son of Benjamin and Margaret (Needham) Russell.

He fought in the following engagements:
- Battle of Bull Run
- Battle of 2nd Bull Run
- Battle of Chancellorsville
- Battle of Fredericksburg
- Battle of Gettysburg
