Bertha attended public schools in Lynn Massachusetts but had lived in Hollis since 1929 at 12 Silver Lake Road the family homestead of Thomas Cummings, an ancestor. She was Town Clerk between 1957-1982 and Treasurer of both the Hollis Woman's Club and the Ladies Reading and Charitable Society. A member of the DAR, she was Regent of the Anna Keyes Powers Hollis Chapter. Her interests included bridge, sewing, rug braiding and music, and because of this she helped reactivate the Hollis Town Band in the 1940's.
