Barstow served in the Massachusetts Artillery. He fought at the battles of Malvern Hill, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. He enlisted as a second lieutenant and served in the Third Light Artillery. He remained in service throughout the war and was in many notable engagements. He retired from active service on December 10, 1889.
