Scottish-born German pianist and composer (originally Eugène). He was educated in Britain, and, at the age of seventeen, he won a scholarship to study in Austria. Feeling kinship with German culture and music, he soon emigrated to Germany, where he studied with Franz Liszt and began a career as a concert pianist. He is famous for his operas "Tiefland" and "Die Abareise," and was admired and renowned for his interpretation of the piano works of Bach, Liszt, Beethoven, Brahms. Some of his operas included "Die tote Augen", "Revolutionshochzeit" (Revolutionary Wedding), "Der Golem," and "Mister Wu." He had 6 marriages, something he was also known for, and stormy divorces; second wife was pianist Teresa Carreno.
