Dr. Douglas Sellers Bruce, DDS, 81, of Harrisonburg, passed away Saturday afternoon, Nov. 3, 2012, at Oak Lea Nursing Home.

A son of the late Richard T. Bruce, Sr. and Mattie Virginia Phillips Bruce, he was born on May 8, 1931 in Collinsville, PA. He was an Eagle Scout and graduated from Harrisonburg High School, did Pre-Dental work at Madison College, now JMU, and earned his D.D.S. at MCV. Dr. Bruce practiced dentistry in New Market for 35 years before retiring back to Harrisonburg in 1995.

Dr. Bruce served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was a member of the Rotary Club in New Market and also Asbury United Methodist Church in Harrisonburg. He was an avid outdoorsman - enjoying hunting, fishing and golfing.

On Sept. 23, 1951 he married Emily Long Bruce who survives him. Also surviving is a son, Gregory Bruce D.D.S., and wife, Sandy, of Lewisburg, PA; three daughters, Tamra Steffan Bruce of Lancaster, PA; Gwen Moore and husband, Curtis, of Dallas, TX; and Patti Hunter and husband, Edward "Ned" of Lancaster, PA. He also leaves nine grandchildren, Katelyn Bruce, Nick and Neil Slotterback, Kelly Chenault, Haley Clapper, Kristen and Reid Moore, Paden and Meredith Hunter; two great-grandchildren, Jack and Courtney Chenault; one twin brother, Dr. Dale H. Bruce of Stuarts Draft; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Dr. Richard T. Bruce, Jr.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012 at the chapel of Lindsey Funeral Home in Harrisonburg with his nephew, Rev. Keith Cook, officiating. Private interment will be earlier in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens.
