Ira Holt enlisted as a Corporal in Company K of the Fourth Michigan Volunteer Infantry on June 20, 1861, for 3 years of service. He was wounded in action at Fredericksburg, Virginia on December 12, 1862, and discharged for disability due to those wounds on March 7, 1863.

Ira Eugene Holt was born May 3, 1843, in New York to Cyrus and Polly (Vedder) Holt, who were both also born in New York. After Ira's birth in 1843, Cyrus and Polly relocated to Michigan settling in Marion Township, Livingston County with their six children: Judson, Nicholas, Malvina, William, Charles G. and Ira, all born in New York.

After being discharged from the military, Ira returned home to marry Elizabeth Lasher, who was born on September 24, 1843, daughter of John and Ann Maria (LaGrange) Lasher. The marriage took place July 9, 1863, in Fowlerville, Livingston County, Michigan.

Their children were:
1) William Holt 1864 -1911
Twins:
2) Nettie Holt 1875 - 1950
3) Nellie Holt 1875 - 1939

Elizabeth died 7 Feb 1906, age 62. Her husband, Ira survived her.

Ira E. Holt, married for a second time on September 5, 1906, in Howell, Livingston, Michigan, to Mary Howland Archer, who was born in1845, at Redman, Huron County, Michigan, to George Howland.

Ira died 23 Nov 1921, Howell, Livingston, Michigan. His wife, Mary survived him.
