William Harry (Sonny) Pendleton, loving husband and father, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Friday morning. September the 17th 1999, at the Grove General Hospital in Grove,Oklahoma. He was sixty one years old William was born on the 4th of September, 1938 in Seminole, Oklahoma to William (Cotton)Ordell and Clara Nadine (Herndon) Pendleton. He attended school and graduated from the Miami High School, Class of 1958. He attended college at Washburn University, earning a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration in 1965. He was a member of the Delia Sigma Phi fraternity.
William was a communications officer with the Strategic Air Command during the fallout of the Cuban Missile Crisis.
William fell in love for the first and only time when he met, his sweetheart and wife, Joan Carole Francis . They were married in Commerce,Oklahoma on February the 21st, 1959. From their love came four children, Terri (Brian) Sanday, Sandra Jo Pendleton (on find a grave), William Dean Pendleton and Laura(David)Wood.
After receiving an Honorable Discharge from the Air Force, William entered the transportation industry. He owned and
operated Roadmasters Inc. in Dyersburg, Tennessee until ill health forced him into semi-retirement.
He served as board memeber and president of the Tennessee Motor Transport Association, and served on the board of directors of the American Trucking Association from 1984 until 1988. William was very active on the Dyersburg
Hospital Board, Dyer County Election Commission, instituted crime stoppers and several community boards. He was active in the Kiwanis, Lions Club, and Freemasons.
William loved and was very active in southern politics, and served as a campaign manager for several state and local political candidates. William was a philanthropist who instituted and gave out many college scholarships. He was a colonel in the Confederate Air Force.
In 1991, he and his wife, moved back to her hometown. Grove. Oklahoma. William had a life long faith in his Lord and was a member and attended the Shepherd's Chapel Church in Gravette, Arkansas, He was an avid bible student and scholar. He will long be remembered for his instant wit and constant humor even in the face of adversity and illness. He will be remembered as described in I Timothy 3:7, "I have fought the good fight, and I have finished the race; I have Kept the faith." KJV
He is survived by his loving wife, Joan, of the home; children, sister, Dee Ann Coddington, of Cuba, Missouri; brother, Mike Pendleton. of Steelville, Missouri; father and mother in law. Dexter and Ella Francis, of Grove, Oklahoma: nine grandchildren; six great grandchildren.
A graveside service for William will be held at the Olympus Cemetery, Grove, Oklahoma, at 2:00 Monday afternoon. September the 20, 1999. Pastor Delbert Roberts of Shepherds Chapel will officiate. Military rites will be conducted by The Grove Veteran's Ritual Team. He will be laid to rest as the Bagpiper, David Roundtree comforts the family with the music of their Scottish heritage and ancestors.
