Heber's father is my uncle.
Heber Meeks was born Friday, October 10, 1890 in Orderville, Utah to Heber Jesse Meeks and Clarissa Amanda Bowers.
He grew up in Southern Utah and was elected president in grammar school. He was a graduate of Utah State University and served as student body president.
Heber married Effie Mame Fullmer on December 17, 1919 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They were longtime residents of the Avenues neighborhood of Salt Lake City, residing at 634 "I" Street (680 East) from 1950 until 1986.
Heber was very active in politics and religion. He was a natural leader throughout his life. He was the executive secretary of the Utah State Democratic Party for several years. He served as U.S. Director of the 1940 Census for the State of Utah, director of the Federal Home Loan Corp. for Utah, and director of the State Securities Commission.
He successfully managed the campaigns for U.S. Senator William H. King and Utah State Governor Henry H. Blood. Just prior to World War II, he received an appointment from the U.S. War Department to be a civilian represenative in the Organization of Military Camps. This gave Heber and Effie the opportunity to live in Washington, DC. and several areas of the Southland which they came to love.
Heber was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Heber was called to the bishopric of the Forest Dale Ward. He served three missions: Southern States Mission as a Youth, The Peter Whitmer Visitors Center at age 80, and the great joy of his life, President of the Southern States Mission at age 50.
At the completion of this mission, he was commisioned by the church to purchase property in Florida for the church ranch at Orlando and then to manage the operation of it. He was called as a sealer in the Salt Lake Temple at age sixty-two.
Heber passed away of causes incident to age on Wednesday, March 19, 1986 at his home.
Funeral Services were held on Saturday, March 22, 1986 at 12:00 p.m. in the Ensign Fourth Ward Chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints located at 465 "K" Street. A viewing was held on Friday from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Russon Brothers Salt Lake Mortuary located at 255 South 200 East in Salt Lake City, and at the Church, one hour prior to the services.
Heber was laid to rest folowing the conclusion of the Funeral Services at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park in East Millcreek.
