Born to John Hummel, whose mother brought him to America in 1749 from Wurttemberg, and Christiana Catharine Grundler Hummel Feaga, who emigrated in 1754, Catharine, a life-long resident of Frederick MD, married David Johann Markey (1771 - 1820) in 1796. Their children were Frederick Markey, 1796 - 1827, buried here, David John Philip Markey, 1809 - 1885, also buried here, and Christina Catharine Markey, 1812 - ?, about whom nothing is known who likely died in infancy. During her lifetime Catharine had eleven grandchildren. In 1820, she married widower Henry Garnhart, 1754 - 1828, of Frederick MD and Charles Town WV.

She made some of the finest applique quilts of the early 19th century; many are now in private and museum collections, including the DAR Museum, Washington, DC. As a quiltmaker she is known today as Anna Catharine Hummel Markey Garnhart. Many of her quilts can be seen online at QuiltIndex and other websites.
