George Martin Long
(1927-2011)

George Martin Long was born on June 12, 1927 to John and Elizabeth Long. He passed away on October 5, 2011 at age 84 from injuries sustained from a fall.

Dr. Long was a retired surgeon who practiced medicine in Eugene for 29 years. He attended high school in Klamath Falls and earned college degrees at Oregon State University and the University of Oregon Medical School. After serving in the U.S. Navy and Army Medical Corps, and completing his medical training in Portland, he established a medical practice in Eugene in general surgery. He served on the surgical staff at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eugene, twice serving as Chief of Surgery. To his patients and their families he was a dedicated and tireless healer in the days of daily rounds and weekend house calls.

Following his retirement, Dr. Long devoted his time to his many interests including gardening, golf, attending concerts, and walking his favorite beagle companion, Joe. He was especially fond of times spent with his family. Together they spent several fall afternoons wearing the black and orange at OSU football games. There were many more special memories of times spent with his six grandchildren: Kristin, Greg, Brian, Michael, Fanny and Ariel at his home at Black Butte Ranch and on anniversary cruises to Alaska.

Dr. Long was married for 62 years to his devoted wife, Lois. Together they raised three children who all live in Eugene with their spouses: Richard Long and his wife Sally; Judy Reyneke and her husband Tony; and Steve Long and his wife Marcee.

A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, October 13, 2011 starting at 1:00 p.m. at the Central Presbyterian Church located at 555 East 15th Street in Eugene. Memorial donations can be made to the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Fund.
