MAN ATTACKS 2, TAKES OWN LIFE
NEWBERG, Feb. 28 (Special)-- Lynn D. Warden, 54, farmer of the Buck Heaven district of Chehalem mountain, seven miles north of here, Tuesday afternoon severely injured his wife, Grace, 58, and a step-son, Ward MacMaugh, 38, by clubbing them with a gun, then took his own life, with a shotgun charge, in a quarrel over the presence of the step-son in his home.
Both Mrs. Warden and MacMaugh were brought to the Willamette hospital here. She was treated for left shoulder and right elbow injuries and lacerations to her face and scalp. Her son sustained eight deep scalp wounds.
The Oregonian newspaper, Wednesday, March 1, 1939, page 4, column 8.

The death certificate for Mr. Warden says he died in Hillsboro, Yamhill County, OR. In studying this we know that Hillsboro is in Washington County, not Yamhill county, BUT.
I know all too well that some cities, especially large ones like Hillsboro often times extend their boundaries over into adjacent counties, partially at least. Newberg, Oregon is in Yamhill County, Oregon due south of Hillsboro.
In looking at the tragic death story in the paper, Lynn Warden and his family lived just north of Newberg, Oregon. Where they lived was in the Chehalem Mountain, Buck Heaven district.
I managed to find county and city maps and they show that a small part of Hillsboro city limits extend over the county line into Yamhill County right where the Warden family lived. So, even though the Warden's lived a lot closer to Newberg than they did Hillsboro, they did indeed die in Hillsboro, Yamhill County, Oregon.
