Roman Catholic Cardinal. Holding the title Protopriest as the Church's senior Prelate in age and length of service, he shall be remembered as the longtime Archbishop of Rio de Janeiro. Born at Acari to a family of wealth and position, he was educated in the Seminary of Fortaleza and was ordained a Priest on November 21, 1943. Following a decade of parish service in the Archdiocese of Natal, he was consecrated Bishop on August 15, 1954, and initially named Auxillary of Natal. As Bishop, he participated in all four sessions of Vatican II between 1962 and 1965 then on October 29, 1968, was appointed Archbishop of Sao Salvador da Bahia and thus Primate of Brazil. Created Cardinal by Pope Paul VI on April 30, 1969, he was named to head the new See of Sao Sabastiao do Rio de Janeiro in 1971, then was to participate in both conclaves of 1978. A theological conservative who closed seminaries teaching 'liberation theology,' the Cardinal was a respected leader and an important figure in Church affairs throughout Latin America; during the years of military rule, he spoke out against human rights abuses by the junta, then with the 1984 transition to civilian government was critical of the lack of agrarian reform. He submitted his age-mandated retirement request in 1995, though it was not to be accepted until 2001. He remained in Rio de Janeiro as Archbishop Emeritus and assisted in the 2005 funeral of Pope John Paul II, though he was barred by age from voting in the conclave which elected Pope Benedict XVI. The Cardinal died of a heart attack.
