Artist. He was an American impressionist painter at the dawn of the 20th century. One of the better-known figures of the "Indiana School" of painting, he studied at the Royal Academy in Munich, Germany, as well as in London, England, before returning to the United States. He specialized in Impressionist landscapes of his native Indiana, spending much of his time in the city of Muncie there. Along with artist T. C. Steele, he is considered one of premier artists from Indiana. After his Muncie Art School closed, he taught art at the John Herron Art Institute or the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the John Herron School of Art, and at his home, the "Hermtage." His paintings were awarded medals in international exhibitions including the World Fairs in Louisiana in 1904 and San Francisco in 1915, the Buenos Aires Exposition and Chile Exposition in 1910, and in Chicago in 1894 and 1907.
