Arizona Governor. He became governor of Arizona in October of 1977 when Governor Raul Castro resigned to become United States Ambassador to Argentina. Unfortunately, he was only able to serve a short period of time as he died of a heart attack five months later. He was succeeded in office by Bruce Babbitt. Bolin was best known for his record as being the longest serving secretary of state – almost 30 years. He was described as a tall, handsome, grey-haired, and dignified political leader that was equally effective in Democratic and Republican administrations. He attended Phoenix public schools and Phoenix College, and later studied law through extension courses. He entered politics in 1938 when he was elected constable of the West Phoenix Precinct and followed that with elections to Justice of the Peace from 1942 through 1948. At that point he was the surprise winner of the race for secretary of state and was easily reelected every two years until he became governor.
