World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Scotland, he served as a Seaman in the British Royal Navy Reserve. During the landing on V Beach Cape Helles, Gallipoli, Turkey, on April 25, 1915, Seaman Samson was on the ship HMS River Clyde that was attempting to land 2000 troops onto the beach. When lighters forming the bridge between the steamer and the shore began to drift apart, Seaman Samson even though being wounded, under fierce machine gun fire, he busied himself among the wounded and offered assistance to those repairing the bridge. For most prestigious gallantry, he was promoted Petty Officer and invested with the Victoria Cross by King George V at Buckingham Palace on October 5, 1915. After the war he found employment in the Merchant Navy and died at age 34 from double pneumonia on board the S.S. Strombus, bound for Bermuda.
