Ashanti War Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Lance Sergeant in the 42nd Regiment, Black Watch, British Army. In the battle at Amoaful, West Africa, on January 21, 1874, although badly wounded, Lance Sergeant McGaw continued to lead his section in fighting through the bush for a whole day. For extreme courage and leadership, he was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal.
