US Congressman. He enlisted in the Confederate Army upon the outbreak of the Civil War, rising to Captain and commander of Company K, 42nd North Carolina Infantry regiment. Late in the war he was detailed to serve as Inspector General on the staff of Confederate Major General Robert F. Hoke. Following the war, he served as a member of the North Carolina state senate before being elected to represent North Carolina's 6th District in the United States House of Representatives, serving in that office from 1891 until 1895.
