U.S. Senator. Born in Jefferson County, Tennessee, he graduated from Washington College and during the War of 1812, fought in the Battle of New Orleans. After the war, he studied law in Washington, D.C., was admitted to the bar in 1814 and practiced law in Knoxville, Tennessee. He was superintendent of the United States land office in Alabama, in 1836 and a government agent for removing the Indians from Alabama and Florida, in 1838. In 1840, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Hugh L. White, serving until 1841. Not a candidate for reelection, he was the leader of an overland company in California in 1849, a member of the California State Senate, (1850-51) and a Supreme Court Judge of California, (1851-53). He later practiced law in Washington, D.C. and during the Civil War, practiced law in Mobile, Alabama. He died at age 74 Knoxville, Tennessee.
