Monegasque Prince. The only son of Louis I Grimaldi, like his father, to whom he succeeded in 1701, he undertook the military career under the aegis of the French armies of Louis XIV, participating in the war of the Palatinate or the Great Alliance (1688-1697) and subsequently, as ruler of Monaco, to the Spanish succession war (1701-1714). In 1705, he was in great difficulty having to defend the Principality from the siege of the Royal Navy engaged in an anti-French coalition. The excessive expenses for the attempted fortification brought the economy of Monaco to the brink of bankruptcy and a possible cession to Savoy. Only the political intervention of France allowed him to consolidate the independence of the small state (1713).
