World War I Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. Born in Australia, he served as temporary acting Lieutenant in the 25th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers, British Army. On September 3, 1915, during a mounted infantry engagement at Maktau, Kenya, East Africa, the enemy were so close that it was impossible to get the more severely wounded away. Lieutenant Dartnell, who was himself being carried away wounded, seeing the situation and knowing that the enemy's black troops murdered the wounded, insisted on being left behind. In attempt to defend and save the lives of other wounded men, he gallantly gave his own life. For most prestigious service in the face of the enemy, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross Medal.
