Roman Catholic Pope. Born as Rinaldo Conti, he was created Cardinal Deacon in 1227 and four years later became Cardinal Bishop. He subsequently became pope December 7, 1254. As pope, he continued to participate in fight over the kingdom of Sicily, supporting England's claim. He also was drawn into the conflict between Richard of Cornwall and Alfonso of Castile. Despite ongoing political and ruling conflicts tearing Italy apart, the Pope tried to unite Christian leaders again the threat of Tartar invasion without success. During his reign, he canonized St. Clare.
