He was the husband of Albertina Huck who after his death married wealthy Englishman Maldwin Drummmond in 1910. She died near Southampton, England at age forty two. Her father was Louis C. Huck of Chicago.

On November 22, 1905, Marshall Field, Jr. suffered a gunshot that would prove to be fatal. Although newspapers reported it was an accident and occurred at his home, there is some evidence that he was shot by a prostitute at the high class brothel, the Everleigh Club.
