US Senator. He served as a member of the Delaware State House of Representatives in 1826, and was appointed as a Delegate to the Delaware State Constitutional Convention held in 1852. He was elected as a Democratic Senator from Delaware to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of John Middleton Clayton and served from 1857 to 1859. He unsuccessfully tried to retain his seat through reelection, and was defeated for the seat by Willard Saulsbury Sr.
