U.S. Congressman. He attended the academies of Bellingham and Amherst, the Worcester Manual Labor School and taught school in Douglas, Massachusetts (1835-36). He graduated from Brown University at Providence in 1845 and was an instructor in Worcester Academy (1845-48). He also studied law, was admitted to the bar, but did not practice law and founded the Oread Collegiate Institute, a school for young women in 1848. He was an alderman of Worcester (1852-53) and a member of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives (1853-54). While in the state legislature, he organized the New England Emigrant Aid Company, which set up an advance colony of antislavery settlers to Kansas. In 1857, he was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-fifth and Thirty-sixth Congresses, serving until 1861. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he engaged in railroad and business pursuits until his death.
