Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Served in the Civil War first as Lieutenant Colonel of the 2nd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry (which was part of the Army of the Potomac's "Iron Brigade"), then as Colonel and commander of the 5th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services". From 1866 to 1870 he served as Wisconsin's Secretary of State.
