Spain President. He served as President of the Second Spanish Republic from 1931 to 1936. Born in Priego de Cordoba, Spain, he became a lawyer and later became involved in politics. Jailed in 1930 as result of his republican views, he took part in the successful revolution that led to King Alfonso XIII leaving the country, and became the first president of the new Spanish Republic. In May 1936 he was ousted as President and replaced by the left-wing partisan Manuel Azaña. Soon afterwards Spanish Army officers, including Emilio Mola, Francisco Franco and José Sanjurjo, began plotting to overthrow the Popular Front government, a move that resulted in the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War on July 17, 1936. Alcalá Zamora intitially moved to France, but after the invasion of the German Army during World War II, he went to Argentina, where he died in 1949.
