U.S. Congressman. He graduated from the State Normal College, in 1898, taught school in Blount County and was tax assessor of Blount County, Alabama, (1900-09). He was a member of the Alabama State Democratic executive committee, (1908-10), Blount County agricultural demonstration agent, (1910-130, Alabama State Auditor, (1914-18) and Alabama State commissioner of agriculture, (1918-22). In 1923, he was elected as a Democrat to the Sixty-eighth Congress and to the next five succeeding Congresses, serving until 1935. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he served as a member of the Farm Security Administration, (1935-43). He then lived in retirement until his death at age 99.
