U.S. Congressman. He graduated from the State Normal College, from the law department of the University of Alabama, in 1883; was admitted to the bar in 1885 and commenced the practice of in Tuscumbia, Alabama. He served in the Alabama State Senate, (1892-94), judge of the circuit court of the eleventh judicial circuit of Alabama (1898-1906) and a member of the Alabama State House of Representatives, (1910-15). In 1915, he was elected as a Democrat to the Sixty-fourth Congress and to the next nine succeeding Congresses, serving until his death at age 73.
