US Senator. A lawyer by training, he spent most of his adult life in government service. His was elected as a member of the Alabama State Legislature just three years out of law school. He served in this position from 1938 until 1942, when he resigned from the Legislature in order to enter active duty as a member of the United States Naval Reserve in World War II. After the war, he returned to Montgomery, this time as a member of the State Senate. He served in this capacity from 1946 to 1950, when he was elected as Lieutenant Governor of Alabama. He served two separate terms as Lieutenant Governor, from 1951 to 1955 and 1963 to 1967. In 1968, he was elected as a Democrat to represent Alabama in the United States Senate. He served in this position from January 3, 1969, until his death in 1978. His widow, Maryon Pittman Allen, was appointed by Alabama Governor George Wallace to finish his term.
