He attended the University of Washington, (1922-24), University of Alaska, (1924-25), was a reporter, Alaskan Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, (1925-33) and secretary to Delegate Anthony J. Dimond of Alaska, (1933-34). He also was chairman of the Unemployment Compensation Commission of Alaska, (1937-39), appointed secretary of Alaska by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, (1939-44) and a member of the Alaska War Council, (1942-44). In 1945, he was elected as a Democrat, a Delegate to the Seventy-ninth Congress and to the next six succeeding Congresses, serving until 1959. Upon the admission of Alaska as a State into the Union, in 1959, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate, serving until his death at age 64.
